Amphoras Bar

Love love love. Yummy food. Great service. Free street parking in the evenings. This is share food at its best. The wine service is non-pretentious and it is wonderful for small groups who like to pick and share and try new things. Don't bother trying to share desserts.

Address: 1303 Hay St, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Tapas

Price range: $$

Must try: calamari

Public House

If you can tell the quality of the kitchen by the way they treat their humble vegetables, then the brilliant 'burnt' carrots suggests there is some magic behind the scenes at Public House

It's a bit hit and miss, with some great dishes and crazy desserts, but the service was vague and music so loud everyone was shouting. Perfect for small groups who want to try a huge range of interesting dishes but not so good for vegetarians.

Address: Shop 2, 263 Adelaide Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 South American

Price range: $$$

Must try: burnt carrots or crispy polenta

1907

It's oh so posh and oh so elegant, from the heavy curtains, to the impeccable service; from to the mirror lined chariot de fromage to the impressive tiling in the bathrooms. Prices are on the high end, even for Perth, but there is no faulting the quality and precision that goes into the dishes. Definitely a special occasion restaurant.

Address: 26 Queen St, Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$

Must try: the 1907 Chocolate Plate

Tarts Cafe

A rambling beast in Northbridge, part shop, part cafe, with a lounge room, a board room and an al fresco dining area. The breakfast menu runs until midday (2pm on weekends) but the lunch menu looks even better and the range of cakes on display will please everyone (including those who want GF).

Address: 212 Lake St, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $$

Must try: breakfast bruschetta

The Old Crow

There is so much going on here at The Old Crow you don't know where to look. It's like Grandma's
house on drugs, with a 1960s porn star's stereo system and food coming out of the kitchen that you want to snaffle away and hide like you're Gollom and it's the ring. But you shouldn't because it's really meant to be shared.

Address: 172 Newcastle St, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Modern/Soul food

Price range: $$

Must try: the char-grilled corn and the death-by-chocolate dessert

Lalla Rookh

A salad of peas, goats feta, fried bread and mint - one of the best things I have eaten this year

Every time I have been here, there has been a dish or two that has blown my mind. And it's not always a fancy seafood or meat dish like you'd might expect, sometimes it's a simple vegetable dish or pasta. Except there is nothing simple about them.
Friendly staff and hidden underground: what's not to like? Good for lovers of savoury food.

Address: 77 St Georges Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 Italian/Share plates

Price range: $$

Must try: Pea salad

Pancakes @ Carillon

Pancakes as a special treat brings so many great memories back to me as a child growing up in the 80s. Now I bring my own children here, sometimes for breakfast, sometimes for lunch - but always for pancakes. They do sweet and savoury, and breakfast is what you would find elsewhere, except with pancakes instead of toast. Awesome!

Address: Level 3, Carillon Arcade, Perth City

Cuisine:
 Pancakes

Price range: $

Must try: old school lemon crepes

Caffissimo West Perth

It's coffee, it's freshly made rolls and baguettes, it's a chance to rest for a few minutes while you're out and about in West Perth. Uncomplicated food with friendly staff.

Address: 73a Colin Street, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: freshly made lunch rolls

The Hyatt Cafe

Of the three separate 'kitchens' at the Cafe, the dessert buffet somehow ends up being everyone's favourite. Waffles made fresh to order anyone?

The buffet at the Hyatt Cafe is enormous but that doesn't mean the quality is compromised. You will certainly pay for the privilege and you should only bother going if you have a decent appetite, but you could easily eat your weight in fresh seafood. Only bring the kids if they are adventurous eaters with hollow legs.

Address: Inside the Hyatt, 99 Adelaide Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$

Must try: the dessert buffet

High tea @ C Restaurant

It's a gimmick but it works, and the view from the restaurant on the 33rd  floor is definitely unique in Perth. Service often lets down C Restaurant, even though the food is consistently good (albeit expensive). The High Tea is very nice but I wouldn't go in a large group and I wouldn't bother bringing the kids.

Address: Level 33, 44 St George's Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 High Tea

Price range: $$$$

Must try: petite fours, the iced tea

Black Toms

Pork belly and crackling: not for the faint hearted

During the day it is full of business people, doing deals over oysters and expensive wine, but it is still a great place to stop for lunch (if you can find a place to park) or dinner. It has a reputation for seafood but the menu covers all manner of beasts.

Address: 27 Ord St, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern/Seafood

Price range: $$

Must try: Pork belly

Miss Maud's Seconds and Discounts

Not at all scary...

They don't really advertise, and it's a bit hard to find. And when you get there you think this can't possibly be the right place, but once you're inside you will find all the excess stock, seconds and other discounted goodies from the Miss Maud's Bakehouse. Go with an open mind, as you don't know what will be available, but you should find everything from full cakes to sausage rolls to muffins and breads.

Address: Rear, 136 Fitzgerald Street, Perth

Cuisine:
 Bakery

Price range: $

Must try: whatever is available

The Classroom

The crazy rhubarb and lemon curd meringue, it made everyone quiet for a moment

The Classroom is fun, and if you can get a seat in the back row then that's even better. With smokin' cocktails (literally) and inventive food, you feel like you fit in with the cool kids.

Address: 356 Charles St, North Perth

Cuisine:
 Bar

Price range: $$

Must try: the chicken wings

The Heritage Bar and Brasserie

Cheapest on the menu - Cumberland sausages and mash, and how good do those onion rings look?

There is a lot to like about The Heritage, one of the flash new restaurants in ΓΌber cool Brookfield Place. It can feel a little stuffy at times, perhaps it's all the suited businessmen lingering over 'work dinners', but the $25 special will make you smile, if you can't find anything on the (pricey) main menu (though you will). One tip, save room for dessert.

Address: 131 St George's Tce, Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern Australian

Price range: $$$

Must try: the hot fudge sundae

Hyde Park Hotel

It's a pub so you can't get too excited, but it does what it does, and it does it well. The entire place has been renovated and it's pretty flash. There are cheap as chips specials every day of the week. Perfect for a casual meal with a beer or two.

Address: 331 Bulwer St, Perth

Cuisine:
 Pub Grub

Price range: $$

Must try: healthy salads (believe it or not)

Breakfast @ Gordon Street Garage

These sweetcorn fritters with corn salsa, feta and house smoked salmon is probably my all time favourite breakfast.

The room is a cavernous, converted workshop, with various spaces to enjoy the fantastic food, and you will find all sorts of Perth people perched on tables and couches and bar stools. Breakfast is my favourite meal, and the ones I have eaten here are some of the best I have tried. It's big, it's loud and all the frills are in the food.

Address: 6 Gordon Street, West Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $

Must try: sweetcorn fritters or polenta with avocado and salsa

Amuse

If you are an unadventurous eater, if you lack stamina or the ability to try new things that might look a little strange, if you are economically disadvantaged, claustrophobic or are a control freak, then eating at Amuse is not for you. However if you want to be challenged (in a dark dark space) then get your credit card ready and prepare to be amazed.

Address: 64 Bronte Street, East Perth

Cuisine:
 Fine dining

Price range: $$$$

Must try: pumpkin and curry leaf

El Compa Mexican Cantina

Sure, the food doesn't look beautiful, but it certainly tastes beautiful

It feels like you're sitting at someone's backyard plastic table but the food is crazy good, the accents sexy and you will discover a whole new appreciation for Mexican food. No grated cheese in site!

Address: 78 Lake St, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Mexican

Price range: $

Must try: the dips, especially the black bean one

Steamboat @ Dragon Seafood Chinese Restaurant

If you have never enjoyed a steamboat you need to rectify that straight away. It's the ultimate in all-you-can-eat-buffet combined with the pleasure of DIY. Cook your own meat, seafood, veggies, noodles and dumplings at your very own table. Messy but fun.

Address: 108 James Street, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Chinese

Price range: $$$

Must try: try it all
