Satsuki

You need to eat here simply to stare at the very beautiful food. It tastes glorious too, but it is a feast for the eyes as well as the mouth. The location may not be overly inspiring (it sits on top of the Subiaco train station) but the food does its best to distract from the comings and goings outside.

Address: Shop 1, 50 Subiaco Square, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Japanese

Price range: $

Must try: tempura battered tuna roll

Breakfast @ Clancy's Fish Cafe

You'd be forgiven for thinking that there would be a lot of fish on the menu at Clancy's, but at breakfast time (they open at the sensible hour of 7am) there's actually hardly anything fishy at all. With a relaxed, beachy feel, a no-bookings policy, and an outdoor seating area that looks over a playground (and the beach), it is perfect for families and swimmers and everyone in between. The food is quick and tasty and everything is better when you're staring at the ocean.

Address: 195 Challenger Parade, City Beach

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: quirky breakfast items

1907

It's oh so posh and oh so elegant, from the heavy curtains, to the impeccable service; from to the mirror lined chariot de fromage to the impressive tiling in the bathrooms. Prices are on the high end, even for Perth, but there is no faulting the quality and precision that goes into the dishes. Definitely a special occasion restaurant.

Address: 26 Queen St, Perth

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $$$$

Must try: the 1907 Chocolate Plate

Metro Indian

If you are looking to feed a crowd of hungry people then look no further than the banquets (there are three) at Metro. Although not advertised, we were told the banquets were bottomless and we could order more curries if we finished. Sounds great, except the quantities dished up initially are generous anyway. It's fun, they serve cocktails, there's bling on the walls, the food is fine and there is plenty of it.

Address: 6/420 hay St, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Indian

Price range: $$

Must try: the chicken tikka

Moss Black Cafe

A tiny little cafe in the 'burbs that punches above its weight with own-made breads, mayonnaises and jams. Pop in for breakfast, grab some gourmet rolls to takeaway or sneak in some slice at morning tea. Popular take away coffee and plenty of reading material to peruse while you wait.

Address: 1/24 Cardigan Tce, Jolimont

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: the BLT

Six Senses

Six Senses is a bolt hole at the lower end of Rokeby, so small you can easily walk past it. Once you're in, the smells and sight just hit you, and even if you have to wait for your food, it's ok - anticipation aids digestion, right? It's a tad pricey but the food is oh so pretty and full of flavour (except the spring rolls for some reason). It's BYO so don't make the same mistake I did! Really interesting food.

Address: Shop 23, 17-31 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco (opposite old markets)

Cuisine:
 Thai

Price range: $$

Must try: red duck and lychee curry

Cafe Cafe

I remember eating breakfast here in the past and loving it. Recently I have been underwhelmed. Still, the serves are generous and it is popular with large groups of cyclists and families who spill out into the al fresco area. There is plenty of free reading material and the cakes in the cabinet look pretty awesome, so maybe stop by for afternoon tea.

Address: 29 Station Street, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: the takeaway coffee and muffins are always popular

Walk Cafe

Perennially popular, this cafe in Subi has extensive menus (even if there is a bit of confusion about the difference between the breakfast and brunch menu). Still there is a great range of interesting options, but make sure you are there early, as it closes at 3.30pm, so there is no chance for afternoon tea...

Address: 97 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

The Village Bar

We have had some hits and misses here over the years but the thing is, we keep going back because it's so good for groups. The food ranges from good to ordinary (desserts don't even rate a mention though) but they are very accommodating for large groups, and it's the type of place where everyone can find a dish to satisfy, and the prices are cheaper than most other places in Subi.

Address: 531 Hay St, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Pub grub/modern

Price range: $$

Must try: roast beetroot salad

Tarts Cafe

A rambling beast in Northbridge, part shop, part cafe, with a lounge room, a board room and an al fresco dining area. The breakfast menu runs until midday (2pm on weekends) but the lunch menu looks even better and the range of cakes on display will please everyone (including those who want GF).

Address: 212 Lake St, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $$

Must try: breakfast bruschetta

Sayers Fine Food

Eat here. Be happy.
Breakfast and lunch are both top notch, but Sayers is also one of those rare places in Perth where you can go for a proper afternoon tea, with generous serves of home made cake and slice, with plenty of gluten-free options.

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Lanna Thai

When we visited in 2012 (for takeaway) we had prompt service and well flavoured food. The range of Thai salads makes a nice departure from the heavy, coconut curries, perfect for a hot summer day.

Cuisine:
 Thai

Price range: $$

Must try: yum nua (grilled beef salad)

Kiri Japanese

It's a little bit back to front, with a lunch menu bigger than the dinner menu, the good room and the yellow room, the traditional dishes and the not so traditional (chips!). But it is top quality, immaculately presented and very intimate. Very small and very popular.

Address: 142 Onslow Rd, Shenton Park

Cuisine:
 Japanese

Price range: $$$

Must try: chicken kara-age

The Wembley Hotel

There's good and there's not so good, but it's important to remember it's a pub. The serves are generous, but the food can be a little bland. Service was a no-show the time we visited, but management seemed genuinely concerned about improving it. The polenta chips with cheese dipping sauce were a deliciously, naughty, albeit calorie laden highlight to the night.

Address: 344 Cambridge St, Wembley

Cuisine:
 Pub grub

Price range: $

Must try: polenta chips

Juanita's Wine and Tapas

You don't go to Juanita's for a meal, but you will be fed if you go there. Order your wines by the glass, squeeze your way past the assortment of artwork, and pot plants, tables and old chairs, and if you're lucky you will find somewhere to sit. If you're lucky.

Address: 341 Rokeby Rd, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Bar

Price range: $$

Must try: drinks by the glass, platters to share

Feast Cafe

You don't have to have kids to be welcome at Feast, but if you do have little ones, then you will be very welcomed indeed. Kids have their very own glass walled playroom, so they can play and you can enjoy breakfast or lunch or just rest your head on the table and snooze. For those who are watching what they eat, there is a huge range of healthy (yummy) options, plus some decadent looking cakes for those who aren't.

Address: 363A Cambridge St, Wembley

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: healthy range of salads

Breakfast @ Caffe Vero

The food here is satisfying, a little out of the box (hello Bunny Chow!), and with a great big covered deck out the back set up with couches and a TV so it kinda feels like home.

Cuisine:

Thach's Quan Vietnamese

So much food. So little money. TQR is the epitome of cheap and cheerful. The banquet options and casual atmosphere make it perfect for large groups - they can handle almost anything. Wear your fat pants.

Breakfast @ Atomic Cafe

Despite its name, Atomic didn't blow my mind.
Everything was nice, I'd eat there again if I was at The Quarter and needed feeding. But it is nothing to rave about.

Address: The Square, Claremont Quarter

Cuisine:
 Cafe

Price range: $

Must try: eggs and dukkah

George's Meze

The flavours are BIG at this great local Greek restaurant, big and salty and savoury. The type of food you want to pick up with your fingers, and then lick the plate, and have a few glasses of wine, and laugh loudly with friends. This is no place for delicate eaters with subtle sensibilities: it's fun and it's meaty and it's rustic and it's very, very filling. Burp.

Address: 26 Denis Street, Subiaco

Cuisine:
 Greek

Price range: $$$

Must try: lamb kebab

Breakfast @ Steve's Fine Wine and Food

Mum always said that if you don't have anything nice to say, then don't say anything...

The room is flash and the linen serviettes are top quality. They also played pretty cool music.

Address: 30 The Avenue, Nedlands

Cuisine:
 Modern

Price range: $

The Old Crow

There is so much going on here at The Old Crow you don't know where to look. It's like Grandma's
house on drugs, with a 1960s porn star's stereo system and food coming out of the kitchen that you want to snaffle away and hide like you're Gollom and it's the ring. But you shouldn't because it's really meant to be shared.

Address: 172 Newcastle St, Northbridge

Cuisine:
 Modern/Soul food

Price range: $$

Must try: the char-grilled corn and the death-by-chocolate dessert

Lalla Rookh

A salad of peas, goats feta, fried bread and mint - one of the best things I have eaten this year

Every time I have been here, there has been a dish or two that has blown my mind. And it's not always a fancy seafood or meat dish like you'd might expect, sometimes it's a simple vegetable dish or pasta. Except there is nothing simple about them.
Friendly staff and hidden underground: what's not to like? Good for lovers of savoury food.

Address: 77 St Georges Terrace, Perth

Cuisine:
 Italian/Share plates

Price range: $$

Must try: Pea salad
